Happy 2014! I had big plans to start shifting gears to my "big work" images today, but then Lily was in a posing mood and I couldn't resist. This is more than usually dignified for her, so hopefully not too boring!
I haven't done a koi pastel in a while, and it seemed like a fun way to sign off for the holidays. I'll be back posting new work after the new year begins (maybe sooner). I'm not sure what that will look like, as I have some spring festivals to think about... I may do some pieces closer to my main body of work here, and/or I may post a little less often for a bit.
Lily is probably the only cat I have ever seen that doesn't immediately stop whatever she is doing the second a camera appears. Quite the opposite, she morphs into Austin Powers, writhing and twisting into one silly pose after the next. The sixties-inspired chair made the perfect backdrop as she worked it. Yeah, baby, yeah!
A few months ago, the benefit auction for a local animal shelter started me down the road of painting cats. This is not a road I ever intended to go down, but let's face it, it's kind of fun. So far I've done three pastels of my studio cat Lily. After a while, this exclusivity started to seem a bit silly, since at home lives the World's Cutest Adult Cat. It's Mocha!
A pastel of my studio cat, Lily, recently sold at an auction to benefit an animal shelter. It was a pretty popular item, so I decided to take advantage of Lily's modeling prowess and give it another go. Here, she claims my favorite chair of some twenty-odd years.
Time for a koi break! I love coming back to these koi as a subject every once in a while. They have become easier for me to paint with time. The paintings get looser, but to my eye the koi feel more real at the same time.
I'm off to the Cherry Creek Arts Festivalin Denver tomorrow, so this will be the last post until next week.
Another beauty from my favorite koi pond. This one had such dramatic fins and a beautiful pale color. I love the way the reflections came out on his lower side. It's kind of funny to me to paint something wet with a dry medium, but sometimes it can really work well.
Lily, a former shelter kitty who lives full time in my studio, has been described as the very model of a cat. Here, I have disturbed her bath. Lily disapproves.
Welcome to my new daily painting blog. This and all paintings I post here will be available for purchase through the Daily Paintworks website. I'm so excited to start this new series of small works. I hope you will enjoy the journey with me.
